S's Story

5 days after graduation I left home and Raymondville (worked several jobs and played 1 season of baseball (catcher) for a NM Team consisting of ex-HS/College players). By summer of '72 I worked my way to N.Colorado. Uncle Sam interrupted my travels and asked for my service in 1972. Little did I realize that my travels would continue. 20 years later I retired after being stationed at FtPolk, FtCarson, S.Korea, FtBliss, W.Germany, FtCarson, Fitzsimmons Army MedCenter, FtBenHarrison, FtBenning and FtBragg. After retiring from the Military ('92), moved to IN where I attended IN Univ and worked 17+ years for the IN State Government (IN Law Enforcement Academy & EPA). My last job (2010-14) was Exec Dir of the 82nd Airborne Association, Fayetteville, NC. Then retired at age 62 in January 2015. Moved to Huntsville, AL for 5 years before beginning Fulltime RV traveling in late 2019. I have 3 Children and 6 Grandchildren (3 in College). Also have 3 Step-Children and 7 Step-Grandchildren (a Marine, a Nurse and a Teacher). RV Wintered in RGV Dec'2022 thru late Apr'2023. Then to Ft...Expand for more
Polk, LA and AL/TN Dixieland. Then to FtJackson, SC. Return to RGV for Reunion, Hotel stay. FtPolk, LA. On to E.Coast, up Hwy 95...to Canada. Then cross country to the Rocky Mountains to visit Family and site seeing! Raymondville has not changed 50+ years later. except for new Schools, a Prison, few Hotels and Restaurants. And worse, the Walmart building south of town is now a Federal Immigration processing facility. Maybe, better paying jobs are available? I'd bet most who graduate from RHS move away. We return to the RGV frequently throughout the year to visit Family, Friends and property. So, we continue to RV. Traveling has changed, will probably be Winter Texans for a few years. Then settle down, yet unknown! (Transferred VFW and AmLegion membership to Raymondville Posts. Am interested in ReStarting the RGV Airborne Chapter and Renaming it the "RGV All-Airborne Chapter", recruiting AIRBORNE Veterans, Active Duty, National Guard and Reserves from All Branches of the Military (Army, AirForce, Marines, Navy ... ).
